Devory Newsome

California-born and raised in Minnesota and Illinois, Devory joined FRC in fall 2010. He works with the juniors and gives private lessons – and studies fitness and nutrition, and their role in athletics. Got questions about that? Ask!

Oddly enough, he played every sport but tennis until he turned 14. Then, his mom gave him a racquet and lessons for his birthday, and he never looked back.

Just three and a half years after playing – and losing – his first match, Devory reached the #1 singles spot on the Edwardsville, IL High School team. At the time, it was the best team in southern Illinois, and Devory and his doubles partner became the first players in the school's history to medal in the state tournament, with a sixth-place finish.

Devory played his college tennis at the University of Illinois, where he earned a bachelor's degree in film studies. Off the court, he writes and records music and tells us he's mixed-race: white, black and a little Native American.
